Angela Mugisha: Money Cowry
interactive performance, for all ages
~2 HOURS
studio rex
Find a cowry shell in the museum and swap it for mango juice.
Date and time:
Thursday 21 January, 5.30–7.30 pm
Money Cowry is a participatory performance by Angela Mugisha, which invites museum visitors to play a game of gathering and bartering, while reflecting histories of value creation and extraction.
In this game, the audience is tasked with finding cowrie shells spread out the museum, which can then be exchanged for a homemade Ugandan mango juice served by Mugisha at a make-shift bar set up in Studio Rex.
Money Cowry references cowrie shells as a medium of exchange similar to coin money, restoring understandings of precolonial African currencies before gold and paper created systems of exploitation.
The performance is part of The Other Side of the Mountain exhibition, which is part of Southnord Artfest 2026.
