Welcome to Amos Rex!

P.S. The museum is brand-new, so we ask that you please be patient, and we also want your feedback. Our goal is to develop Amos Rex into a brilliant place to visit for school groups, to create rewarding experiences for students and to support teachers in their work. Cheers and jeers can be sent by email to: museum@amosrex.fi. Thank you! <3

Independent Groups

We are unfortunately not able to welcome independent groups to visit during the Magritte and Studio Drift exhibitions (applies to all groups, not only schools). This is due to high security standards of the art works. Please read below for more information about our bookable guided tours and art workshops.

This arrangement is an exception, and we wish you a warm welcome to our next exhibitions – with or without a guide!

Art Workshops

Why would a skillful painter intentionally produce ugly pictures?

In February, at Studio Rex, we approach painting under the inspiration of René Magritte’s lesser-known vache period. The theme is ugliness!

In a world dominated by harmonious colour combinations and golden ratios, ugliness is a kind of rebellion.

In the workshop, the guide encourages students to break free of the pressures of art and to explore how it feels to combine colours that clash, to challenge the rules of composition, to make a mess, to have fun and to see what happens. Did you know, for instance, that the first version of the Moomintroll was created when Tove Jansson decided to make the ugliest picture she could?

Ugliness is in the eye of the beholder!

Lenght 1,5 h
Languages Finnish, Swedish, English
Group size  Max. 25 persons

Key words: painting, ugliness, beauty, colour theory

To get started the group will get a closer look at some paintings by René Magritte. The workshop will then dive into colour theory from a somewhat unusual angle: exploring which colours do not go together. Where does colour harmony come from? And who decides what is beautiful and what isn’t?

Optional advance assignment
With your group, choose one ugly colour and one beautiful colour. Find these colours in objects or books in your surrounding environment.  If the group cannot agree on just two, several colours could be chosen. The same colour can be both beautiful and ugly. Discuss your choices.

To get started the group will get a closer look at some paintings by René Magritte. The workshop will then dive into colour theory and composition from a somewhat unusual angle: exploring which colours do not go together and how to make a picture badly. Where does colour harmony come from? Why is the golden ratio pleasing to the human eye?

Optional advance assignment
With your group, choose one ugly picture and one beautiful picture, and bring them with you to the workshop. The pictures can be, for instance, works of art, book illustrations, pictures from the Internet, advertising or magazines. The images can be painted or drawn (not photographs). You can choose several if your group cannot reach a consensus, or everyone can choose their own. There’s no need to explain the choices in advance.
